bauma China made a successful return after a four-year hiatus, setting new records across the board. Held from 26 to 29 November 2024 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, the event spanned over 330,000 sq m, featuring 3,542 exhibitors from 32 countries and regions (a 24% increase from 2020). It drew 281,488 trade visitors from 188 countries and regions, including more than 20% overseas visitors.

\n\n

“bauma China has made an incredible comeback and impressively confirmed its leading position in the Asia Pacific region. The density of top players and outstanding technologies was inspiring. For our company, bauma China is a guarantee and cornerstone of our success,” said Stefan Rummel, CEO of Messe München, which is responsible for the event.

\n\n

“bauma China 2024 has once again set a new historical record,” said Su Zimeng, chairman of China Construction Machinery Association. “Over four days of exhibitions and exchanges, we witnessed impressive achievements by companies serving both domestic and international markets, and gained valuable insight into the new opportunities driven by China’s high-quality economic growth.”

Global innovations

\n\n

bauma China 2024 attracted many international brands, showcasing a wide range of new products customised for the Chinese and Asian markets. There were also national pavilions from Germany, Italy and Turkey.

\n\n

“bauma China provides an excellent platform for showcasing innovative products, services and solutions that address the industry’s present and future needs,” commented Yang Chengjian, global senior vice president of Caterpillar.

\n\n

“The results exceeded our expectations, with an overwhelming number of visitors,” added Song Gongcheng, president of Bomag (China). “Our booth has been bustling with customers and dealers all along, reflecting the industry’s eagerness to embrace change and innovation. We have signed several agreements during the show.”

\n\n

Various Chinese manufacturers also showcased advanced technologies in electrification, hydrogen power, automation and digitisation, illustrating China’s progress in smart technologies and new energy transformation while expanding their international reach.

\n\n

Global participation

\n\n

With record-breaking attendance, bauma China 2024 attracted 281,488 trade visitors, more than 20% of whom were from overseas. The top 10 visitor countries besides China were: Russia, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Brazil and Japan.

\n\n

The event’s success underscored its role as a key link between international markets and China’s fast-growing industry, particularly amid the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, Saudi Arabia’s ‘Vision 2030’ infrastructure investments, and Indonesia’s accelerated mining plan, which are driving demand for construction machinery products in regions along the Belt and Road, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

\n\n

“This year’s bauma China saw the highest number of international visitors I’ve ever encountered, with foreign attendees crowding the venue. It was truly a grand event for the global construction machinery industry,” said Ma Ji, general manager of marketing and sales at Cummins (China) Investment Co Ltd.

\n\n

At this year’s bauma China, two new thematic areas were integrated into the exhibition layout, focusing on intelligent management and cutting-edge new energy technologies. The accompanying forums offered in-depth discussions on hot topics and provided insights into pioneering achievements in sustainability, innovative practices in new energy cooperation and intelligent integration solutions within the industry, which are shaping the future of the industry.

The next bauma China will take place from 24 to 27 November 2026 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

Skyjack has introduced its E-Drive machines in the DC electric scissor range and the electric rough-terrain articulated boom range to the Asia Pacific market. This follows the earlier launch of the scissors in North America and the booms in EAME (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions.

\n\n

“We’re excited to continue our new E-Drive rollout across Asia Pacific. With significant reductions in cost of ownership, we have a truly competitive offering for the region,” said Charlie Patterson, president of Skyjack. “In addition to our classic simply reliable ethos, the new E-Drive machines will see our customers getting more done for less while also having an eye towards meaningful sustainability improvements.”

\n\n

The scissors are designed with an innovative drive system that provides exceptional duty cycles and fully proportional controls, resulting in superior drive experience. The new range boasts better efficiency, controllability and torque. This means that productivity is boosted with an improvement of up to 20% in runtime per charge. E-Drive features consistent power, traction and torque, with over 25% gradeability, so that climbing loading ramps is easy and excellent all-round jobsite performance is achieved.

\n\n

The scissor range will carry Skyjack’s Eco mark, as rental companies and major contractors face increasing demands for sustainability information. Skyjack has introduced the Eco mark to support its customers by providing products that deliver benefits in environmental performance and long-term sustainability.

\n\n

Skyjack’s E-Drive scissors Eco benefits include: operational carbon saving compared to previous models; improved runtime per charge; zero emissions; inherently quiet machines, and an optional white noise alarm; an optional leak containment (Ecotray); and optional biodegradable oil.

\n\n

Chan Tran, Asia Pacific VP of operations at Skyjack commented, “We know how important runtime is to our customers. A longer runtime per charge, plus fewer lifetime charge cycles, means that our customers will spend less on batteries over the life of the machine.”

\n\n

In addition, Skyjack’s new electric booms are suitable for a variety of applications. The all-electric, axle-based drive offers excellent traction, while the high-performance AC electric traction and pump motors deliver high torque power and consistent multi-function capability.

\n\n

The booms’ oscillating steer axle works in conjunction with the drive system to keep all four tyres in contact with the ground, even in the roughest of terrain. The improved traction provides a smoother ride, and consistent multi-function capability delivers a superior operator experience with up to 45% gradeability. With quiet operation and zero emissions, these new booms have the flexibility to work both inside and out, even in emission restricted areas.

\n\n

“The new models boast exceptional duty-cycle performance, capable of supporting more than a typical full day’s use of machine operation,” added Mr Chan. “An additional 30 minutes of reserve allows the units to operate in stowed drive for travel to a charging point.”

\n\n

Like the scissors, the new booms feature the Eco mark and offer benefits including: 42% operational carbon saving compared to previous models; zero emissions; inherently quiet machine operation, <70 dB (excluding alarms); 90% recyclable by weight; as well as 50% less hydraulic connections and optional biodegradable hydraulic oil. Furthermore, telematics and remote diagnostics reduce site visits and operational carbon footprint.

Manitowoc’s Asia range of top-slewing tower cranes will have a major boost in capacity following the announcement at bauma China 2024 of the Potain MCT 2205, with an 80 m jib and maximum 80 t capacity. This new Zhangjiagang, China-built topless model boasts performance levels similar to the largest Potain hammerhead cranes, while making features of flat-top designs available to users such as simplified transport, ease of assembly, and a more compact profile.

\n\n

Despite being Zhangjiagang’s largest crane, the entire top-slewing portion of the MCT 2205 M80, including all 11 sections of jib, can be transported in just 16 trailers or containers, simplifying on-site logistics. The crane’s mast telescoping system is constructed for Potain’s R99A or R910A mast sections.

\n\n

The MCT 2205 offers the ability to deliver heavier loads further across busy jobsites, while reducing its impact on the operation of nearby cranes. The new model can also achieve a 71 m height under hook with PA950 fixing angles, or 99.9 m with PA952 fixing angles. It can carry a 23.5 t payload at the end of its full jib configuration, with its maximum 80 t capacity available between 5 and 26.3 m. This extends to 30.5 m when the jib is built to 45 or 50 m, while 72.9 t can be handled towards the end of a four-section, 30 m jib assembly.

\n\n

With up to 124,000 kg of ballast available, the MCT 2205 comes with two counterjib options – the full 25.2 m, or a 20.2 m design that ensures productive operations can be maintained on tighter, more congested jobsites.

\n\n

This capability is enhanced by the ergonomic V140S Vision Cab and efficient mechanisms such as the 280 LVFC 200 Optima hoisting winch. Supplied with 1,007 m of rope, its 280 hp/212 kW motor enables the raising of 80 t loads at speeds of up to 12 m/min. This same payload can also be propelled horizontally at infinitely adjustable speeds up to 25 m/min, courtesy of the 25 DVFC 35 trolley’s 25 hp/18.5 kW motor. Four RVFC 194 Optima+ slewing motors govern the rotation of the upper structure.

\n\n

“Manitowoc has leveraged its decades of expertise in developing large-capacity tower cranes to design a topless crane that meets our customers’ lifting requirements in this new era of construction,\" said Kwong Joon Leong, regional product manager at Manitowoc. “We are already seeing a great deal of interest from those working on large infrastructure projects, power plants, and other mega projects that require the lifting of very heavy loads.”

On 26-29 November, bauma China 2024 will again take place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). More than 3,400 local and international exhibitors will be on site, with more than 200,000 global visitors from more than 130 countries and regions expected to attend.
